Inhaltsangabe

This collection assesses the impact of television broadcasting on political democracies. It examines the effects on politician's behaviour, the implications for political journalism and raises broader questions of the role of the media in a Parliamentary democracy. The book includes contributions from senior broadcasters, politicians and academics. Broadcasters give accounts of the difficulties involved in filming proceedings; politicians assess the consequences of admitting cameras to the House; and academics analyze the type of material broadcast from Parliament, its impact on newspaper reporting and the responses of viewers. Finally comparative analyses drawn from the television coverage of the American Congress, German Bundestag and European parliament develop a wider understanding of the televising of democracies.
