This book is a comprehensive, but concise, practical guide to modern intensive care practice. It covers the complete care of the patient in the ICU, stressing the multidisciplinary team apporach that is central to modern practice. The text provides the reader with a discussion of the scientific principles underlying treatment, with emphasis on the basic physiology and pharmacology of intensive care in addition to clinical management. Other topics covered in depth include resuscitation, both before and after arrival in hospital, and technical aspects including monitoring, ventilation and laboratory investigations. The problems of establishing, organising and running an ICU are reviewed, as are care of relatives, follow-up after ICU treatment and comparing and assessing outcome.
