PreSchool-Grade 3-- Tolerance, friendship and practicality are the predominating themes of the ten stories and two poems in this book. When the children are not playing with them, their toys lead full, interesting lives. They celebrate birthdays and Christmas, call on toys in nearby houses, and help each other. Sarah Elizabeth Bear teaches the others how to repair themselves so they won't be sold in a garage sale. Each story is accompanied by at least one full-color pencil drawing of its main character. Portraits have an appealing Victorian quality, enhanced by a twist of the nose, a twinkle in the eye, or a flip of the ear. Each tale is satisfying by itself, making this an excellent source of bedtime stories. Second- and third-grade readers who enjoy personified animal tales will enjoy reading the stories by themselves. --Nancy Seiner, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
