Scarce. A definitive reference work providing scientific, clinical, practical and fascinating information about venomous snakes in general and snake venom poisoning in particular. Drawing on more than a quarter of a century of experience, Dr. Russell thoroughly covers all phases of his subject, from the general biology of venomous snakes through possible complications of the poisoning and therapeutic protocols. The first part of the book deals with definitions and terminology, the palaeontology, phylogeny, structure and rattle of snakes; identifications, distribution and behaviour of North American venomous snakes; the venom apparatus: its evolution, history and structure; and venoms. In the heart of the text, the author addresses the medical problems of snakebite in general: mythical, ancient and folk cures; epidemiology; prevention; first aid; symptoms and signs; and medical treatment. Also includes chapters on exotic species of venomous snakes in the United States; the native Gila monster; legal aspects; snake in mythology, folklore and fables; American Indians, snakes and snakebite; and snakes in religion and politics.
