Rezensionen

Grade 4-6 As eager young naturalists seldom know what to do with caterpillars once they've found them, this practical guide to rearing butterflies will prove useful. Focusing on the Monarch butterfly, the book gives simple directions for locating eggs, preparing incubators, setting up small cages for caterpillars (with inexpensive materials), and caring for the insects during each stage of their metamorphosis. An abbreviated section on rearing Black Swallow butterflies is included. A chart at the end identifies the particular food plant of 15 butterfly species (only common names of plants and insects are given) and breaks down the hibernation and/or migration patterns of each. This text is succinctly written and well organized; however, it has a more difficult vocabulary than its large print format suggests, and, while most of the scientific terms are defined in the text, not all are. The lack of a glossary is a definite flaw. The color photographs are well coordinated with the text and most are of excellent quality. Simon's Pets in a Jar: Collecting and Caring for Small Wild Animals (Puffin, 1979) and Whalley's Butterfly & Moth (Knopf, 1988) briefly touch on this subject, but Norsgaard's book provides the kind of nitty-gritty detail that they exclude.
