Grade 5-8 Banished from his homeland, Karl takes his kitewing hang glider to fly across the seemingly endless desert which borders Karanga. Haunted by the failure that branded him a coward, he doggedly makes his way across the desert to a new life in the mountain village of Eftah. There he learns the life of a shepherd. Unfortunately the conquering Hrithdon leaders have heard of the wonderful kitewing and decide to start a flying battalion with Karl as trainer. He and his new friend Rika, whom he has taught to fly, escape but must return to rescue the village headman who has been kidnapped in retaliation. The Hrithdon plan to conquer Karanga is revealed, and Karl decides to return to warn his people, even though his return means certain death. Karl's banishment is commuted on the condition that he lead the group sent to fight the enemy. Through his bravery and ingenuity, the Hrithdon are defeated, and the people of Eftah and Karanga are promised freedom. This is not really thought-provoking fantasy, but with its fierce battles and soaring flights, it is an exciting fantasy adventure that will appeal to young readers. Also, Karl's personal battle with cowardice is well handled. Good, solid fare which might foster a taste for the epic adventures of high fantasy or science fiction. In his debut, Reynolds invents an exciting SF world with tribal technologies, mores, etc., in the tradition of Frank Herbert's weightier Dune series. Karl of Karanga loses his nerve during a hunt for "terrys," fearsome reptiles whose bones frame the kites the hunters fly on. As punishment, he chooses banishment rather than death and eludes pursuers, reaching another settlement at the end of an "uncrossable" desert. Here the shepherds of Eftah are menaced by the Hrithdon empire. Befriended by a brave girl, Rika, Karl acts heroically, vindicating himself and saving her people as well as his own from would-be oppressors. The fairy-tale predictability is made genuinely fresh through the author's vision and feeling for his characters: Murthdur, leader of the Hrithdon; Rika's grandfather Gardo; Athgar, head of the sheepherdersnot just the principals but minor players as well.
