A seemingly innocuous inquiry leads a successful novelist to recall long suppressed childhood memories of "Mad Molly" Benison and the tragedy, trauma, and violent death that happened forty years earlier. Peter Malcolm de Brissac Dickinson OBE FRSL (16 December 1927 16 December 2015) was an English author and poet, known for children's books and detective stories. Dickinson won the annual Carnegie Medal from the Library Association for both Tulku (1979) and City of Gold (1980). Through 2020 he is one of eight writers to win two Carnegies. He was a highly commended runner-up for Eva (1988). For his contributions as a writer Dickinson was a finalist for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2000. Dickinson published almost fifty books, which fall into three general categories: crime fiction for adults (including the James Pibble series), speculative and supernatural fiction for older children, and simpler children's books. In this brilliant crime novel by CWA Gold Dagger winner Peter Dickinson, a writer looks back on his past and discovers the memory of a murder that needs to be solved. It's been forty years since Paul Rogers spent a night at St. Aidan's Preparatory School. When a biographer asks the now-middle-aged novelist about his youth, it triggers memories that Rogers thought he had lost forever. He begins writing about the summer of 1940, when the Nazis took Paris and his entire boarding school was evacuated to a country house in Devon. There the boys discovered a pastoral countryside whose woods held untold mysteries--one of which, Rogers realizes in hindsight, might have been a murder. To write about this long-forgotten crime, Rogers digs deep into his past, uncovering terrifying recollections that may or may not be real. Something gruesome happened that summer, but understanding it will force Rogers to clear the fog of memory and unravel its mysteries once and for all. From a description found on-line: Hindsight is a crime novel focusing on a middle-aged author, Paul Rogers, who revisits his childhood memories of the summer of 1940. He reconstructs events that reveal a potential murder, blending memory, mystery, and a coming-of-age narrative set against a backdrop of wartime England. The story alternates between the narrator's present and his past, as he realizes a significant, dark, and potentially fatal incident occurred at his school. The main events take place during the summer of 1940, specifically during the evacuation of a boarding school. It is recognized as a crime/suspense novel, often noted for its character-driven, psychological, and analytical approach to solving a mystery from the past. The novel explores the unreliability of memory, childhood perception, the innocence lost during wartime, and the long-term consequences of hidden truths. The book is often noted for its complex structure and atmospheric setting rather than just the action of the mystery itself. First American Edition [Stated]. Presumed first printing.
