Eine schöne junge französische Jude, Paula Bernheim, und ein preußischer Offizier, Wilhelm von Rhode, treffen sich und verlieben sich. Innerhalb weniger Monate sind sie verheiratet und in Berlin niedergelassen – gerade als Hitlers Aufstieg zur Macht beginnt. Die Geschichte, was mit diesem jungen Paar passiert, dient als Mikrokosmos für den europäischen Krampf, da Hitlers giftige Antisemitismusmarke in alle Schichten der Gesellschaft eindringt.
