This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications LARGE-SCALE OPTIMIZATION WITH APPLICATIONS, PART II: OPTIMAL DESIGN AND CONTROL is one of the three volumes based on the proceedings of the 1995 IMA three week Summer Program on "Large-Scale Optimization with Applications to Inverse Problems, Optimal Control and Design, and Molecular and Struc tural Optimization." The other two related proceedings appeared as Vol ume 92: Large-Scale Optirpization with Applications, Part I: Optimization in Inverse Problems and Design and Volume 94: Large-Scale Optimization with Applications, Part III: Molecular Structure and Optimization. We would like to thank Lorenz T. Biegler, Thomas F. Coleman, An drew R. Conn, and Fadil N. Santosa for their excellent work as organizers of the meetings and for editing the proceedings. With contributions by specialists in optimization and practitioners in the fields of aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, and fluid and solid mechanics, the major themes include an assessment of the state of the art in optimization algorithms as well as challenging applications in design and control, in the areas of process engineering and systems with partial differential equation models.
Lorenz T. Biegler is the Bayer Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has authored or coauthored over 200 journal articles and two books. His research interests lie in the field of computer-aided process engineering, including flowsheet optimization, optimization of systems of differential and algebraic equations, reactor network synthesis and algorithms for constrained, nonlinear process control.

Andrew R. Conn is a research staff member at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY. In 1994 he was (with N. I. M. Gould and Ph. L. Toint) a joint recipient of the Beale/Orchard-Hays Prize for Computational Excellence in Mathematical Programming and with Chandu Visweswariah he received an IBM Corporate Award in 2002 for contributions to circuit tuning. Currently his major application projects are in the petroleum industry.
