Rezensionen

Gr 2-4-- Not for the faint of heart, this centuries-old poem chronicles the death and burial of Cock Robin in melodic verses--``Who caught his blood?/I, said the Fish,/ with my little dish;/ I caught his blood.'' Rooted in English oral tradition, the poem is best shared aloud due to its singsong meter and repetitive verse structure. McRae, an Australian illustrator, has combined architectural precision with the richness of aboriginal designs in constructing highly stylized yet recognizable animals out of geometric shapes and vivid colors. A crisp white background brightens the watercolor paintings while helping viewers focus on the intricately detailed images. Although reminiscent of Cawthorne's Who Killed Cockatoo? (Farrar, 1989), also illustrated by McRae, the art here is not as elaborate, and this simpler text may be more accessible to a wider audience. Fortunately, McRae's graphically designed paintings are different enough from William Stobbs's surrealistic ones in his version (Oxford, 1990) to warrant considering both. --Dorothy Houlihan, White Plains Public Library, NY
