Henry Roth (1906-1995) was born in the Austro-Hungarian province of Galitzia. He probably landed on Ellis Island in 1909 and began his life in New York on the Lower East Side, in the slums where Call It Sleep is set. He is the author as well of Shifting Landscapes, a collection of essays, and Mercy of a Rude Stream.

It brings together the darkness and light of Jewish immigrant life before the First World War as experienced by a very young boy, really a child, who depends on his imagination alone to fend off a world so hostile that it begins with his own father. When Henry Roth published Call It Sleep, his first and only novel, in 1934, it was greeted with critical acclaim, but quickly dropped out of sight, as did its twenty-eight-year-old author. Only with its paperback publication in 1964 did the novel receive the recognition it deserved. Call It Sleep was the first paperback ever to be reviewed on the front page of The New York Times Book Review and it became a nationwide bestseller, with over a million copies in print. HENRY roth was born in 1906 in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His family emigrated to the United States in 1908 and he grew up in New York City, on the Lower East Side's Avenue D. He has, at various times, worked as a toolmaker and waterfowl farmer, sold maple syrup, raked blueberries, and tutored math.
