Ann Cameron is the author of many books for children, including The Secret Life of Amanda K. Woods (a National Book Award Finalist) and four other books about Gloria, Julian, and Huey that have sold over half a million copies. She lives in Guatemala, Central America.

Lis Toft lives in England on the Isle of Wight.

Grade 2-4-This beginning chapter book features six stories about Gloria Jones, a friend of Julian and Huey Bates, who were first introduced in The Stories Julian Tells (Pantheon, 1981). In the first story, Gloria hangs the valentine she made for her mother on the front door and it blows away, landing at the bottom of a parrot's cage in a neighbor's yard. Mr. Bates comes to the child's rescue and helps her find material to make a new one. In another story, the friends help train Huey's dog. In the last story, Gloria's father helps her understand fractions and to see that all children and adults face obstacles or "rocks in the road." While some of the situations are improbable, especially Gloria's valentine blowing into the bottom of a giant parrot cage, and all of the parental figures are too good to be true, this book will find an audience with children who like reassuring stories. Fans of this series will not be disappointed.

When an agitated parrot ruins the valentine Gloria made for her mother, for instance, patient Mr. Bates plants just enough ideas to help her start a new one. Cameron offers a delightful companion to the books featuring Julian and his little brother, Huey, who were last seen in More Stories Huey Tells (1997). Here, their friend Gloria has her say. From the ups and downs of friendship to the importance of knowing where she stands with her dad, Gloria has plenty on her mind. Her six short, episodic stories of everyday struggles and occasional triumphs will appeal to young readers, particularly those who know the characters from Cameron's earlier books. Lis Toft's shaded pencil drawings portray these African American characters and their predicaments with warmth and humor. A good choice for children who are ready for chapter books. Carolyn Phelan

Fans of Cameron's Huey and Julian stories (More Stories Huey Tells, 1997, etc.) are in for a treat as Gloria, their friend from those tales, gets a book of her own and graciously allows the two brothers to share it . In the first tale, Gloria makes a wonderful card for her mother, but the wind blows it away and it ends up in the cage of a cantankerous parrot. Thanks to Mr. Bates, Huey and Julian's dad, the day is saved, as is the burgeoning friendship that Gloria and the boys have struck up with new neighbor Latisha in the story, ``The Promise.'' In another story, Gloria has to deal with a huge problemfractionsand this time it's her dad who helps her through it. Mr. Bates proves helpful again when the group trains an ``obsessed'' puppy, while Gloria's mother is supportive when Gloria is unintentionally hurt by her three best friends. The stories are warm and funny, as Gloria, a spunky kid who gets into some strange predicaments, finds out that her friends and wise, loving adults are good to have around when trouble beckons.
