He has been a regular contributor to The New Yorker. His work has also been published in The New Republic and The Atlantic, and several anthologies, including The Best of Modern Humor, edited by Mordecai Richler. This second book by Ian Frazier, following his collection of humor, Dating Your Mom, consists of five long pieces, written between 1978 and 1986. Authentic accounts of Massacres, as well as An Angler at Heart; Nobody Better, Better Than Nobody (1983); Bear News (1985); and Komar and Melamid (1986). Grateful acknowledgment is made to The New Yorker, where all these pieces first appeared. Frazier's love for the poetry of simple fact puts him in the tradition of great New Yorker reporters like A. J. Liebling, Joseph Mitchell, and Lillian Ross. The collection's title story is an affectionate profile of Heloise, the syndicated household-hints columnist who tells people how to use peanut butter to remove gum from kids' hair, and how to shave deviled eggs flat on one side so they won't slide around on a serving tray. When it was first published, George Higgins noted in the Boston Globe: "The profile was immensely funny and Frazier ought to get some kind of award for coming clean as well as writing well." He doesn't hesitate to include copious information about himself, his experiences, how he came to be interested in a particular topic, and so on. This approach produces remarkably vivid stories--all of them, at heart, about the strangeness and excitement and trigger-happiness of being an American. The New York Times critic James Gorman described Frazier's 1996 humor collection Coyote v. Acme (in the title piece, Wile E. Coyote is suing Acme Corporation, the manufacturer of products such as explosives and rocket-propelled devices purchased by the coyote to aid in hunting the Road Runner; these products always backfire disastrously) as the occasion for "irrepressible laughter in the reader." Gorman rates Frazier's first collection, 1986's Dating Your Mom, as "one of the best collections of humor ever published. Derived from a Kirkus review: These five essays were originally published in The New Yorker. Frazier makes every word count. His humor, at once antic and elegant, proves to be a wonderful and expressive a voice for non-fiction. This book teaches us many things: that any publicity is bad publicity for a bear; that the Last Indian Raid in Kansas Museum has an extensive barbed wire collection; that the Angler's Roost fishing tackle shop sells the book Better Badminton; that Paris, to the author, seems like a girl who wouldn't go out with him in high school. The title essay is on the syndicated newspaper column "Hints from Heloise" and its author. What Frazier celebrates is the hints' ability to give things a greater reality by naming them. Genuine help for homemakers is not as important as the column's recognition of the nooks, peeves, doodads, and dirty collars of existence. Heloise is an observer of the small things that tell. So is Frazier. Every move of his prose is a delight, as he sifts away the vast and general in wise preference for the small ironies and ordinary dilemmas of individual experience.
