The authors soon realized the hopelessness of completely reviewing even that part of the phenological literature concerned only with forest trees. Early observers lacked uniform criteria for describing annual phenomena and varied in their skill in describing and recognizing floral stages. These factors as well as the bulk and inaccessibility of the older literature caused the writers to restrict their survey mainly to more recent publica tions on floral phenology of conifers.
