Further, importing power is not solely a question of the tonnage available, but of the economy and efficiency with which it is employed. The annual carrying-power of the ships depends on the size and character of their cargoes, their employment in trades for which they are suited by their construction, the proportion of laden to ballast voyages, and the number of voyages made. The number of voyages made depends on the length of the routes, and the speed with which the ships can be loaded and discharged. Turn-round in port depends, in its turn, on readiness of cargo at the ports of shipment and on the facilities for distribution to inland centres from the ports of discharge.
