Excerpt from Program of Exercises for North Carolina Day (McIver Memorial Day)<br/><br/>We have deemed it Wise and proper to turn aside this year from our plan of celebrating North Carolina. Day in the public schools by the study of the great events in the past history of the state in chronological order to let the children study the life and character of one who, in the years to come, will be recognized as the greatest educational leader of our day and as a great central figure in the educational and industrial development of our state. We wish this day to be devoted, therefore, to a. Reverent. Study of the life, character, and unselfish service of Charles D. Mciver, the children's friend, the teacher's friend, the state's friend, the effective and courageous champion of all that vitally affected the interests of these. We know no more effective means of teaching to the children of this generation the all-important lesson of civic service and civic duty, of inspiring them with the highest ideal of patriotism and right living and of inculcating in them the best educational doctrines than the study of the splendid object-lesson in all to be found in the simple story of the life and teachings of this man.
