One of the immediate results of the publication of the first edition of this pamphlet was a sudden influx to the author of letters of enquiry. These letters came almost entirely from two classes of men - from railroad employes and from farmers, or, at least, residents in small towns and rural neighborhoods. The enquiries were for the most part of an elementary nature, such as What is the difference between bonds and stocks P What does capitalization' mean and so forth. In view of this fact, readers who are more familiar with the subject matter of the railroad question will pardon the introduction of this very elementary preface.
