At the end of Washington's second term, in fact as he pre pared his farewell to public life, the life-giving alliance was dead and the United States were virtually at war with France. In probing the problem I have attempted, wherever possible, to analyze the role of ideas and attitudes in the evolving franco-amer ican rupture.
