Excerpt from Text Book of Mechanical Drawing: Being an Explanation of the Principles of Geometry and Orthographic Projection, the Helix, and Toothed Gearing as They Are Applied by Mechanical Draughtsmen
The light is assumed to come from the upper left hand corner of the drawing at an angle of 45 degrees to all horizontal and vertical lines.
This method is very simple and easy to remember, inasmuch, as in every view of the drawing of an object, the bottom and right-hand side of each plane surface which is visible are shade lines.
These lines always lie between the arrows which are drawn parallel to the 45 degree line.
