But a study of the campaigns since the Great War demonstrates that naval command exerts a very remarkable influence over land Operations under certain given conditions. And it is the purpose of this volume to trace through the military annals of the past eighty years how, sometimes indirectly, at other times in decisive ob vicus fashion, dominion on the waters has affected conflicts between the armies which the enmity of nations has brought into antagonism.
