Tn: idea that these papers, which originally appeared in the journaqme United States Artitlay, should be republished in book form was not thought of until the last paper describingthe new instrument recently installed at the Artillery School was shout to he published. The reprints of the first paper, which contains a discussion of the general principles upon which the operation of the chronograph depends, soon became exhausted, so that it was desirable to have it republished in some form. At the suggestion of friends and through the courtesy of the Editar of thejom-nal itwasarranged to publish the collected papora in the form now submitted.
