The subject matter, in about the form here presented, has formed the basis of one part ot'a series oflectures by the authors in the Department of Architect ure of the University of Pennsylvania, the details of that phase of the subject which relates to the mechanics of venti lation having been purposely omitted, as they are discussed in another volume of this series.

It is hoped that the book may prove useful, not only as a popular presentation of the subject for the general public, but also as a suggestive outline in architect ural, engineering and other schools in connection with, or as supplementary to courses of lectures which are introduc tory to the whole subject of the ventila tion of buildings.
