In this book W. H. Lawrie looks at trout flies both old and new, and arrives at lists of proven patterns which will meet all conditions which the modern fly fisher is likely to encounter, whether he fishes running water or still, in the north or in the south, with wet fly or dry. Traditionally, different styles of fly tying have grown up in different parts of Britain. As with anything designed to catch fish, the ultimate arbiters must be the fish themselves; the reader is encouraged to look at both natural and artifi( 1.11 flies from the trout's point of view, and appreciate how the impression received by the eye of the trout will depend conditions in which a given fly is fished and on the technique of the fisherman. Mr. Lawrie also considers the role of new materials, such as fluorescents and synthetics, in fly tying and points out the problems in modern fly tying to which tradition may not supply an answer. One such problem is the hackling of dry flies, in which the ever-acuter shortage of first dass cock hackles may be overcome by the substitution of animal hair—hitherto, ironically, used more for wet flies than for dry.
Notable too is the revolution caused in trout fishing by the increasing emphasis on still-water fly fishing and by the need to cater for the tastes of the imported Rainbow as well as the indigenous Brown trout. Modern long-distance casting also calls for more durable and streamlined flies than were required in traditional loch fishing…
