Featuring a courageous and likable heroine, Bickmore's ( East of the Sun ) novel successfully integrates the escapades of its characters with the history of Australia during the 19th century. Hallie Thomas receives an unusual offer: Chad Morgan, who raises sheep in New South Wales, has written to ask her to marry him, although they've not seen each other in years. Eager to flee the grinding poverty of Newcastle, England, Hallie accepts. When she falls ill during a long and wretched sea voyage, her life is saved by Dr. Tristan Faulkner. The two are immediately attracted to each other, but Tristan is a penal colony prisoner (convicted of treason for urging Canada to rebel against England). Hallie marries Chad, a kind though emotionally remote man. When Chad journeys to England to sell fleeces, Hallie expands their holdings, enjoying a sense of freedom and frequent visits by Tristan, now a respected practitioner. On Chad's return five years later, Hallie finds herself caught between the man she loves and a husband who expects her to relinquish her hard-won role of farm manager for that of wife. Some careless errors, primarily anachronisms, flaw Bickmore's otherwise convincing historical backdrop.
