Inhaltsangabe

What led Alec Gilmore into the Baptist ministry was above all the desire to preach, and throughout his life that preaching has had unfailing attraction for him. Indeed he believes that it is the most important aspect of ministry. However, he no longer preaches in the same way. Something changed.
Earlier, his preaching was always essentially cerebral. Not necessary learned, and indeed sometimes simple or even trite, but a matter of brain to brain. A dimension was missing. Then he discovered drama. He found that the great biblical and theological issues were increasingly being handled on the stage of London's West End and had always been present in the best dramatists, and a local group which made a practice of going to the theatre and discussing the play afterwards confirmed him in his view. So preaching became theater, with the aim of making something happen. It became more concerned with perception of familiar facts than the presentation of new knowledge or information; more an attempt to increase awareness than to present ideas; more a way of touching a chord rather than stimulating a will.
What this means in detail for writing sermons lies at the heart of the book. Here are suggestions for preaching which begins with the Bible, preaching which begins with life and preaching which begins with literature. Some possible sermons are discussed in considerable detail; numerous ideas for others are presented rather more briefly. The book, which will prove invaluable to all preachers, both clergy and lay, ends with surveys of current trends in preaching and current trends in theological study.
