W. B. Yeats, 1865-1939 - Softcover

This is a biographical account of Yeats' life detailing his early family life, his schooldays, his London years, his rise to literary fame, his relationships and marriage, his Oxford period and his career in public life.

The first edition of this admirable biography was published four years after the poet's death; no subsequent account of Yeats's life has replaced it. Since 1943 there have been a number of critical works of a very high order, but no one since Hone has had such free access to the papers dealing with Yeats's personal life, and the assistance which only Mrs Yeats could offer. Unhappily the author did not live to prepare the second edition (now reissued fifty years after Yeats's death) himself, as he died in 1959. In 1943 Yeats's body still lay at Roquebrune. A short epilogue to this edition therefore describes his subsequent interment at Drumcliff in 1948. Some minor alterations have also been made to the text.
