The Marchen has two primary qualifications that make it useful for elementary reading: its style and its con tent. The language is that of everyday life; and, as the editor of this little reader has not hesitated to remove obsolete and dialectic phrases, it is his belief that these stories appear in the ordinary language of to - day, and present a vocabulary that Will be useful both in future reading and in conversation. As to content, this is surely as interesting as that of any story that can be told in the limited vocabulary and simple constructions demanded in elementary work.

It will be seen that the book contains representatives of the older collections With the language modernized, and selections from later authors. These latter have not had the difficulties of construction eliminated to the same extent as the former, and Will accordingly help to prepare the student for the more difficult texts that will follow the use of the reader.
