Excerpt from A Syntactic, Stylistic and Metrical Study of Prudentius: A Thesis Presented to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

The object of the present work is twofold first, a study of t syntactical and metrical usage of Prudentius, and, to a certa extent, of his style, together with a brief introduction on the Form and secondly, a comparison of the latinity of that author with t latinity of Juvencus, an author of the same country and of t same century; to ascertain wherein they are alike and in wh they differ, and to determine in this way the relation of Prudenti to his predecessor, aiming throughout to throw some light up the latinity of the age. In order to facilitate such a compariso the investigation has been pursued on parallel lines to tho followed by Hatfield in his study of Juvencus, a plan based f the most part upon Draeger's Syntax und Stil des Tacitus. Comparisons are also made at different points with the usage Vergil, more particularly in 112, 113, 118, 119, 141, 14 143; and with the usage of Horace in 146. Parallel pa sages in other authors have also been added by way of illustr tion. Chiefly through the assistance of the valuable indices of t volumes in the Vienna Corpus Script. Ecol. Lat.
