It IS diflicult for me adequately to express my gratitude to Lord Fitzwilliam for his permission to examine the hitherto unpublished Strafford mss. Preserved at Went worth Woodhouse. They should prove of interest and pleasure alike to the historian and the general reader. Indeed, these letters alone furnish a reason for a new bio graphy of one of our earliest Proconsuls. I have also to thank Lord F itzwilliam for the permission to reproduce the fine portraits of Laud, straftord, and his family by Vandyke. My thanks are also due to His Grace the Arch bishop of Canterbury, who has allowed me to reproduce the Lambeth picture of Charles I., presented by him to Laud, as also to the Duke of Portland with regard to the portrait of Strafford in armour, and to the Librarian of the House of Lords for Charles I.'s letter assenting to Strarrd's death.
