Edward Fox was born at Portland, Maine, July 10, 1815. He graduated from Harvard College in 1834. He pursued his preparatory legal studies in the office of Willis 83 Fessenden at Portland and at the Dane Law School, taking the degree of l.l.b. In 1837, and was admitted to the bar. He at once became a cc - partner with Randolph A. L. Codman, with whom he continued as Codman Fox until 184 7, when he took his younger brother Frederick a partner under the firm name of E. F. Fox. In the latter association he continued for the remainder of his practice, though it was once interrupted in the efiort to restore the health of his wife by removal to more favorable climate, and again by a brief service on the Supreme Bench of the State.

He was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine, Oct. 24, 1862, and resigned in March, 1863.
