By this means valuable opinions, expressed by distinguished specialists with whom the treatment of the mentally diseased has been a life-long study, have been carefully recorded. Avoiding, as far as possible, medical theories and contro versies, the writer has striven to convey the results of his Observations in plain, untechnical language. His aim throughout this whole inquiry has been to ascertain, from a practical point of View, what are the most advanced, the most humane, and the most economical methods of caring for the insane.
