Excerpt from On Spinozistic Immortality
In this monograph I have endeavored to set forth as clearly as possible Spinoza's doctrine of existences and essences and of the passage of the soul from the world of perishable things to that of things imperishable and eternal. To attain my end, it has seemed to me necessary to subject his conceptions to a care ful, and, I fear, a somewhat tedious analysis. Such an analysis often appears rather hard and unsympathetic, and yet, if it be fair and impartial, it is simple justice. Surely the frankest and the most unsparing criticism should be accorded as a right to a serious and earnest man who has attempted to set forth, for the benefit of others, in an exact and scientific form what he believes to be the truth. An unintelligent and undiscn'minating admira tion is a poor tribute to offer to a man of genius.
