N the making of the present Commercial Code the original intention was merely to revise the former Code. But in the course of the work so many changes have been made that the result was what is substanti ally a new Code, in which the German system is followed even more closely than in the former one. A knowledge of German law is therefore indispensable for any scientific translation or explanation of this Code as well as of the Japanese Civil Code.

A revision of the Commercial Code has taken place in 1911, the results of which have been embodied in Law 73, of May 2nd, 1911.
