Like the first two books of the series, it aims to make pupils proficient in arithmetical processes, and to make them thinkers as well as doers.

To accomplish these ends it provides a great amount of drill work, both oral and written, and a wealth of well graded problems of a varied character, yet practically all closely associated with the affairs of everyday life. In other Words, it may be said that the aim of the book is to give the pupil such thorough grounding in arithmetic as will qualify him to take advantage of any opportunity that may be Open to him, rather than to fit him for some special vocation in which he may not engage.
