As to the history of religion - that is, as to the facts of the case - there really is not much difference Of opinion. Hitherto, indeed, it has not been thought worth much labour or exactness. It has been almost abandoned to theorists, and lies much at the mercy of the ingenious gentlemen who think religion evolved from the seasons, from the habits of life, or from mere accident. As the Almighty is as much in the great fact of religion - that is, in the universal custom of religious Observances - as in any antecedent causes that can be imagined, we may be content with the fact that religion there has been always and every where.
