Non trovando io però che la porta Carmentale possa aver luogo nel numero certo delle tre porte o quattro al più lasciate da Romolo, perchè tutte si trovano già sta bilite con sufficiente certezza, penso che interessi di veri ficare, se Romolo realmente facesse questo secondo recin to, da moderni immaginato e creduto, per includervi il Capitolino, alla cui radice porre la porta Carmentale, e se aumentate così al numero di cinque le porte di Roma nell' epoca della morte di Romolo, si possa smentire Pli nio, che scrisse (i), Uròem tres portas /zabentem Romu lus reliquit, et ut plurimas tradeniiòus cì*edamus quatuor.
