Six years ago few students began the study of the Calculus without having already completed a course in Algebra, including the Theory of Infinite Series. It is now realised that in making this demand the mathematical teacher was asking more than was necessary. The principles underlying the Calculus, in so far as they can be examined in such a course as this, offer little difficulty. N 0 more than an elementary knowledge of Algebra and Trigonometry is required for their discussion; and a real grasp of the meaning of differentiation and integration can be obtained by very many to whom the subject of Infinite Series would appear extremely obscure.
