IT has been my aim in writing the following pages to get at principles rather than to give rules; to treat the subject, that is, from the religious point of view in order to reach the foundation necessary for efficiency in practice.' It has not seemed to me necessary to insert more than a few typical illustrations drawn from personal observation, but I do not think that I have in any case made a general statement without having at least one definite instance of its truth in my mind as I wrote.
