Sand and clay, either pure or intermixed, often rendered coherent by a ferruginous cement, compose the strata of this formation. Ou St. Mary's river, in Maryland, silicified masses occur imbedding innumerable perfect shells. In some localities comminuted shells are abundant, but in others they are absent, and large fragments or water-worn specimens are almost unknown.
