Excerpt from Metallography
Metallography may be defined as the study of the internal structure of metals and alloys, and of its relation to their com position, and to their physical and mechanical properties. It is a branch of physical chemistry, since the internal structure depends on the physical and chemical conditions under which the solid metal or alloy is formed, and the study of structure presents itself as a department of the study of equilibrium in heterogeneous systems. Whilst, however, physical chemistry concerns itself in general only with the nature and relative quantity of the phases in a system, and with the transformations of energy which accompany chemical changes, metallography takes into-account a further variable, namely, the mechanical arrangement of the component particles. It is thus intimately connected with crystallography.
