In the past few years exhaustive experi ments have been made on fuel injection into the cylinder of oil engines. The excessive cost of power with steam and gas engines has aroused interest in the fuel oil engine, and placed it in the commercial field.

As the principle feature and the sale ba sis for the success of the engine lies in the fuel injection, the spray nozzle has been giv en more attention than any other particular phase. Since the nozzle is a long way from being in the state of perfection, all experi mental tests on the performance of oil engines should give the nozzle special attention. Hence, we have chosen the study of the spray nozzle to be the chief object of the experi mental tests herein treated.
