Excerpt from Le Fils De Giboyer
Le fz'i: de Gz'boyer has been called by the German critic Laube, a picture of modern F rench society in its free struggle between a decaying aristocracy, a vain bourgeoisie, and a gifted but unprincipled body of men of literary training. Yet this struggle, he continues, is never described abstractly, but always with scenic fulness and a. Growing dramatic interest, spiced with sparkling dialogue. It is probably the strongest play of its author, but to be fully appreciated it must be judged in connec tion with Les Efrontés which preceded, and with La Contagion and Liam et renam's which followed it, for several of its characters reappear in them. This group, however, itself presents but one phase of Augier's dra matic development, which may be briefly reviewed be fore proceeding to a more detailed study of the comedy before us.
