IN presenting to the public this little volume, I feel I am supplying a want felt by many, viz., a short description of a tract of country which far surpasses in the grandeur of its scenery most other places. Few, indeed, who have not heard of the Falls of Niagara, or read of the rapids of the St. Lawrence, the mighty forests of North America, and the vast plains, the Splendid rivers, and the beautiful lakes with which the Western World abounds. But to single out an account of each particular place from the various authors who have written on the subject, would be a task not within the reach of many; and I know of no work published in this country that contains an account of the places which I have in this little work endeavoured to describe. Before I left England for the United States, I was anxious to obtain some information respecting the tour I proposed to take, but after searching in vain through many libraries, I had to content myself with proceeding to America in ignorance of those places I felt a desire to become acquainted with.
