Thus the university degree undoubtedly satisfies one of the needs of modern life. But then the question arises, what are we to do with those articles of costume, which, in anglo-saxon coun tries, have been adopted as the insignia Of academic standing? If they possess no deeper significance than that of mere finery, they are Of very little value, and might profitably be discarded. But if they have sufficient meaning to be retained in use, it is surely worth while to understand it, and to regulate this use with such care as to make their symbolism intelligible.
