Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Michigan, for the Years 1875-6
Attention to papers connected with unsettled claims of soldiers of the late war, including certificates of service on which to base claims for homesteads; admission of soldiers to National Homes; copying and rearranging the books of record of the late regiment in the war, the old records being very much worn; a work that requires much time and care, together with the correspond ence and reports of the State Troops, constitute the main business of the Office.
At the date of my last Report, two regiments of eight companies each, con stituted the force of State Troops. Four companies were accepted in 1875, and four more in 1876, making in all twenty-four companies, the whole num ber authorized under the law.
