Excerpt from The Two Creation Stories in Genesis: A Study of Their Symbolism; With Footnotes, Appendices and Index
Two distinct stories of creation are contained in the first three chapters of Genesis. They form the introduction to the Old Testament, and are occasionally referred to therein, but it cannot be said that any definite claim is made by the writers that these are documents which narrate actual history. Indeed, no historic validity appears to be ascribed to them in any of the sacred writings of the Hebrews.
The fact of there being two accounts of creation in Genesis, one succeeding the other without explanation of any kind, has always been a puzzle to commentators, especially to those who attribute to them an historic basis. Many and varied are the views which have been expressed concerning them for centuries past. Attempts have even been made to show that the first creation story is, primarily, a revelation con cerning the geology of the earth.
