Excerpt from Pitman's Where to Look: An Easy Guide to Books of Reference

The aim of this work is to provide an index to the more familiar annual books of reference and a few specified standard works. There is scarcely any topic of conversation or subject of public interest which is not treated in a handy form in some such annual book of reference. Of such works, however, the number is so considerable that it would be impossible for the average man to be familiar with either their titles or contents and indeed it would be impossible to give within the limits of a single volume even the bare contents of all such works of reference. In this book, therefore, the main object has been to provide an easy guide to those works of reference which it is assumed readers who use this Index either have at hand or can easily consult at any club or public library.

The plan adopted is to give as the first reference that which is, as far as can be judged, the fullest. In cases where in addition references are contained in some other books which are in common use, they are also added for the sake of convenience, and subjects which are not referred to in the ordinary popular annuals, but which are likely to present themselves in the course of one's work, are indexed and the reader told where the required information may be found.

The Publishers will be grateful for criticisms and suggestions which may help to improve future editions of the work.
