It was either supposed to represent three bosom friends engaged in reading a proposal, all unconscious of the proximity of the pro poser himself, accompanied by some eager listeners, or a group of ladies engaged in discussing the latest bit of scandal. Whilst some of those concerned are hearing their own characters extolled, or otherwise. This shared the enthusiastic reception accorded to the former.
