Excerpt from Report of the State of the Schools for the Indigent Blind, Hardman Street, Liverpool, From December 31, 1864, to December 31, 1865<br/><br/>Tms is the oldest School for the Blind in this Kingdom, having been instituted in 1791, and incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1829. Its object was to cause the Blind to be Instructed in some Art or Trade, by which they should be enabled to earn something at their own homes towards their subsistence, six Pupils at a. Time being taught Music. No Mule Pupil was to be admitted under 14 years, and no Female under 12 years of age, and none were to be admitted above 45 years. The Relatives of the Pupils, or the Parishes to which they belonged, were called upon to contribute to their support. This object, and these conditions, are still adhered to. All the Pupils capable of learning are taught to read by means of a raised type. Out of the 67 Pupils now in the School 50 can read The Pupils generally, who can read, have a portion iof Scripture, in raised type, presented to them on leaving the School.
