The accentual marks in common use indicate, simply, the accented syllables and the inflections of the voice; the eu thor's accentual marks not only do this, but they indicate the melody also. Hence, by the aid of these marks, in connection with the phonetic spelling, foreigners as well as natives will not only be able to pronounce every word correctly, but to give to each sentence its proper elocutionary expression.

The part on gesture is extracted, principally, from Austin's Chironomia, a work which is extremely rare, and one whose great size and expense are insuperable obstacles to its general introduction. All, however, which the Chironomia contains on the subject of gesture, that is particularly valuable, is here presented to the reader within the compass of a few pages.
